Denisovan fossils from Yunnan’s Bianfu Cave reveal richest trove outside Siberia. Two studies published in Nature detail five Denisovan specimens — including the first Denisovan forearm bone ever identified — recovered from Bianfu Cave in southwestern China’s Yunnan province, dating to between 190,000 and 70,000 years ago. Researchers screened more than 60,000 bone fragments using protein analysis and mass spectrometry to confirm the finds, which include skull fragments and teeth from at least three individuals. The cave sits along a migration corridor linking the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to East, South and Southeast Asia, filling a key gap in known Denisovan geography. (Nature/CNN)

Asian and US equity futures tumbled on September 14 after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for AI companies to slow model development, with OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk voicing similar concerns. SoftBank shares fell more than 13% in Tokyo, tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures dropped over 1%, and Altman confirmed OpenAI would not pursue a much-anticipated IPO in 2026, citing safety risks. The selloff underscores growing anxiety that the AI boom powering this year’s stock rally may be overextended. (Bloomberg/CNBC)

China’s factory output beats forecasts as retail sales growth cools further. China’s industrial output rose 5.2% year-on-year in August, accelerating from a 4.5% gain in July and topping the 4.8% growth economists had forecast, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Tuesday. Retail sales rose just 0.4%, slowing from July’s 0.6% and missing the expected 0.8%, while fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% over the first eight months of the year. The mixed release highlights a widening gap between resilient factory activity and weak consumer spending as policymakers weigh further stimulus. (Reuters)

Treasury yields top 5% as AI slowdown fears deepen global stock selloff. The 10-year US Treasury yield breached 5% for the first time since 2023 on Monday as investors continued to digest warnings from Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and other AI leaders about the pace of model development, sending the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 5.9% and pulling Nvidia and Intel shares lower. Asian markets extended the slide into Tuesday, with the Nikkei flat, the Kospi down 0.74% and the Hang Seng off 0.2%, as traders weighed elevated oil prices against this week’s Federal Reserve rate decision. The turbulence adds to signs that the AI-driven rally powering much of this year’s market gains may be running out of room. (Bloomberg/CNBC)
