China's economy loses steam in July as retail sales, investment slump deepens. China's industrial output grew 4.5 percent year-on-year in July, missing forecasts of 5 percent and slowing from June's 5.3 percent pace, while retail sales rose just 0.6 percent, badly undershooting expectations of 1.5 percent growth. Fixed-asset investment fell 6.7 percent year-to-date, a steeper decline than expected, and the urban unemployment rate ticked up to 5.2 percent. The soft data adds to pressure on Beijing to roll out fresh stimulus in the second half of the year. (CNBC)
Beijing asset manager CPE buys Swiss outdoor brand Mammut outright. Chinese alternative asset manager CPE — an investor in Pop Mart and Laopu Gold — has agreed to acquire Mammut Sports Group, the 164-year-old Swiss mountaineering and climbing brand, from private equity firm Jacobs Capital in a deal reportedly valued at up to €500 million. Mammut entered mainland China in 2013 and now runs 61 stores there; CPE plans to lean on that footprint to push deeper into product innovation and distribution across China and the wider Asia-Pacific region. The deal, still subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close within months. (WWD / China Daily)
Shanghai swaps in a second 2,000-year-old silk painting as blockbuster Han tomb show continues. “A House of Nobility,” the China Art Museum's exhibition on the Mawangdui tombs — billed as the most significant off-site showing of the artifacts in over 50 years — is rotating its centerpiece: the silk painting from Tomb No. 1, on view since July 3, has just come down and is replaced from August 18 by the painting from Tomb No. 3. The relay format lets Shanghai audiences see two of China's most fragile and celebrated Han-dynasty treasures without displaying both at once. The show also features the earliest known silk seat cushion, unveiled to the public for the first time. (China Daily)
Oil holds near $88 a barrel as Fed rate-hike bets fade on soft US data. Brent crude traded near $88.30 a barrel Monday, up sharply over the past month as the Iran conflict keeps a war premium in the market, while Asian shares held broadly steady to start the week. Soft US retail sales and weak consumer sentiment last week cooled expectations of a September Federal Reserve move, pulling two-year Treasury yields down to around 4.16 percent. Markets were also digesting China's July activity data, released Monday, which showed both industrial output and retail sales missing forecasts. (Trading Economics)
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swings past $2 billion worldwide in three weeks. Sony and Marvel's “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland, has crossed $2.022 billion at the global box office — $785 million domestically and $1.23 billion overseas — becoming only the eighth film ever to reach the milestone. It got there in roughly three weeks, the second-fastest run to $2 billion after “Avengers: Endgame,” and is now the highest-grossing Spider-Man film in franchise history. (Variety)
Painter Ben Quilty named first-ever ambassador for The Nature Conservancy Australia. The Sydney-born artist, known for impasto portraits and landscapes exploring war, colonialism and masculinity, will support the global environmental group's Australian arm through storytelling and public campaigns. Quilty, who has worked closely with Indigenous communities throughout his career, said the Australian landscape has been “both my subject and my teacher.” The appointment pairs one of Australia's most prominent painters with efforts to raise public awareness of conservation threats facing the country's deserts, rivers and coastlines.
